Mr. Davidson: Album Review

scroll

Opening my eyes at 8:05am this morning was tough; the bright light flooded into my tired eyes and I rolled over, thinking "Oh good, another day in isolation."

Lying there half awake, I reached out to grab my phone. "Friday, 3 April", the phone read. WAIT! It's Friday! The album is out! Suddenly, I was more awake than I had been all week and I was ready to take in the bliss and beauty of what is Mr. Davidson; a mini-album by the incomparable Eloise Talarico.

I got up, made myself some tea, grabbed my headphones and got back into bed. Okay, play.

The second keep the hope started playing, I felt myself transform into another world. I was outside in a beautiful garden and there Eloise was in front of me. Having heard the song played before, I was so excited to hear it again. That classic guitar riff and chord progression, and then the acapella beginning which just makes your heart stop for a second. The song is lyrically stunning and so relevant right now;

"i know that every fire flickers to stay alive

each breath of smoke out a compromise for the air it breathes in

so let my mental reassembly begin

keep the hope"

On top of that, it's just such a groovy tune that you'll have stuck in your head all weekend. Then in comes steady; one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard.

"How do you make my heart race, then all at once come to a steady pace?" YES! WOW YES! (That was my actual reaction the first time hearing that lyric). It's potentially my favourite lyric ever?? And when the "falling" bridge plays you feel like you're listening to another song, but  works into the rest of the song so well. It reminds me of a lot of Ed Sheeran's old music in that way.

Track #3 there's a rock inside my shoe is just as quirky as the title it holds, and I adore it. The chorus to this song is so well written - much like the whole album - but this chorus especially.

"how are you supposed to navigate your brain if you don’t get lost every once in a while,

how are you supposed to see clearer if you don’t clean your mirror"

The next song is buzzing bee, and vocally this gives me Beyoncé vibes with the low notes! Lyrically, the track could be about so many things which is what makes it so special. So emotional, so beautiful. And much like the rest of the album, it has stunning guitar melodies, both electric and acoustic. Each and every song is so beautifully composed and so well suited to the vocals.

Track #5 entitled everyone's trying to hide is the equivalent of my mum giving me advice on tricky social situations. It's so lyrically wise and knowing Eloise, really reflects how she deals with difficult times; with a grain of salt and a mind full of wisdom and kindness.

The song encapsulates Eloise's vocals incredibly well, and honestly her vocals are like none other I've heard; powerful yet sensitive in its nature. This may actually be my favourite song on the album.

The simplicity and raw nature of fear of failure is shown as the track is one guitar and vocals only - just Eloise - and on such an incredibly personal song I can understand why. This amongst many other songs on the album is a small peep into the life of the artist who like many of us, eats dark chocolate to help with anxious thoughts. Such a relevant song.

The final track on the album, i just want to be happy, is the perfect ending to an overall incredible album. We're back with the gorgeous acoustic vibes and immaculate vocal runs. Again, the chorus of this one hits hard, the vocals give me little butterflies, and the song has been stuck in my head since the moment I heard it. Another album favourite, and what a way to finish off.

Mr. Davidson is lyrically deep, touching and beautiful, and Eloise's vocals are unlike any other. Each song on the record differ from each other, yet flow so well together. If you do anything this weekend, grab your headphones and lye back on your bed for 29 minutes and 44 seconds. Take a break, have a little escape. It will be the best half hour of your week.
